His books and stories have been bestsellers in Japan as well as internationally, with his work being translated into 50 languages and selling millions of copies outside his native country. He has also translated into Japanese works by writers including Raymond Carver and J. His fiction, sometimes criticized by Japan's literary establishment as un-Japanese, was influenced by Western writers from Chandler to Vonnegut by way of Brautigan. It is frequently surrealistic and melancholic or fatalistic , marked by a Kafkaesque rendition of the "recurrent themes of alienation and loneliness" he weaves into his narratives.

Birthday Stories : Selected and Introduced by Haruki Murakami
Fragments de lecture Birthday Girl, Haruki Murakami
It is a brief enigmatic piece, about 20 minutes reading time, translated from the Japanese by Philip Gabriel. If it is a parable, it is hard to say what it is a parable of; it is nominally about a monkey who steals names. Yuko is very troubled with questions about jealousy, an emotion Mizuki has never really thought about and for which Mizuki can offer Yuko no answers. When she leaves school for the workaday world, she adds her own name tag to the little box where she stores mementos. She goes on to get married and takes employment with a Honda dealership. She forgets nothing else, but is worried it could be symptomatic of some deeper problem.
Birthday Girl (short story)
I loved it when I first read this story, and to tell the truth, a few years had gone past and it has grown on me ever since. I feel that it is about what we really want to make out of life, the spontaneous choices or decisions that somehow made us. The girl refuses to reveal what she wished for.
Hopefully we all reach those birthday milestones and we get whatever it is we wished for. The main character in this story has reached an important milestone birthday in Japan. At 20 you are a full fledged adult, a member of Japanese society so this birthday is special. The main character however has had a horrible day. Most would think that this is a cut and dry story however it is not.
